One of the hardest challenges for students of all grade levels is writing. The struggle of how and what to write often leads students to believe they are simply 'bad' at writing.

Academic Writing 2B is designed for students at the 4th-5th grade level. This course's focus is aims to enhance students' storytelling and essay writing skills. The three Trimesters break down into:

  • Trimester 1:

    • Students learn the basic elements of fiction where they learn to craft compelling personal narratives, from brainstorming ideas to revising drafts. Then they tackle The Developing the Details of a Fictional Story unit which focuses on creating vibrant short stories, emphasizing plot development and sensory details. Finally, in The Elements of Nonfiction Writing unit, students delve into persuasive essays, mastering the art of structuring arguments with supporting evidence.

  • Trimester 2:

    • Students will learn to craft convincing persuasive essays, write compare and contrast essays, and master the structure of introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions. Students will also delve into expository writing, learning to brainstorm ideas and organize them into coherent essays. Additionally, they will explore the elements of poetry, including sound and poetic devices, to create expressive and meaningful poems. Through self-assessment and revision, students will refine their writing to produce polished final drafts in each genre.

  • Trimester 3:

    • Students master the basic elements of a research paper and crafting compelling responses to news articles and world events. Students start by understanding the structure of a research essay, including brainstorming ideas and creating outlines, learn to gather and cite sources, take notes, and develop a thesis statement. In the second unit, students delve into writing research papers, integrating quotes, and revising drafts for coherence and clarity. The trimester concludes with lessons on responding to nonfiction, where students learn to analyze articles, develop structured responses, and refine their writing through self-assessment and revision.
